Mothers for Dignity: Finding Strength in Shared Loss

A compassionate healing retreat created specifically for mothers who have
lost a child to an act of mass violence — a safe space to grieve, connect, and find renewed purpose together.

Created for mothers who carry an unimaginable loss

Mothers for Dignity was created for mothers who are living with the unimaginable loss of a child to mass violence. At its heart, the program is about reclaiming dignity in the wake of this profound loss. When traumatic grief is met with understanding, community, and professional care, mothers can begin to restore a sense of self, connection, and purpose—moving forward together with strength, compassion, and renewed hope.

This retreat is designed to foster deep connection and resilience through shared experience. In the company of others who understand, participants can speak openly about their grief, feel less alone in their pain, and begin to rebuild a sense of stability and meaning. The emphasis is on both emotional support and the gradual restoration of trust in oneself and others.

The four-day retreat offers a safe, compassionate environment where grieving mothers come together for therapeutic group discussions, guided art therapy, and supportive workshops led by trained mental health professionals. Within this structured setting, participants are supported in processing traumatic grief, honoring the lives of their children, and developing practical tools for coping and long-term emotional well-being.

“The retreat was a moment to honor and hold our grief and trauma together while holding each other up. For the first time I felt I was with others who truly understood what my family and I have been through. And the only agenda of the organizers was to help us.

The experience made me feel seen, supported and cared for. I’ve come home feeling stronger, lighter and have been able to face my son’s birthday and holidays with much more equanimity and joy in the moment.”

— Patricia, Mothers for Dignity participant
